To help the youth in the Bergen County, NJ community

The Police Athletic League of Bergen County is a non-profit organization that gives Bergen County Youth an opportunities to learn new skills and maintain a healthy way of life. Through exercise and training, local youth involved in PAL are taught self-discipline and respect for themselves and others.

Don Somerville

Boxing Coach

When Don Somerville took over as PAL Boxing director in 2010, the boxing program had nine people. More than 90 young people train there now. The gym has become a second home to many of the kids and teens, who have learned discipline and commitment through boxing.
Don currently trains 2x Golden Gloves champion & 3rd ranked 141lb Junior boxer Aadam Ali. Don has produced 3 Golden Gloves Champions, 2 Diamond Gloves champions, and 1 Junior State Champion.

Soke Larry Barr (Soke means Grandmaster/Head of the Family) is a 10th Degree Black Belt who has been training for almost 35 years. In that time, his students have won over 10,000 trophies and medals. Many of them are state, national, and even world champions.
Soke Barr has been inducted several times into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame:

• 2013 Teacher of the Year
• 2014 Man of the Year
• 2015 School of the Year
• 2016 Family of the Year
• 2017 International Grandmaster of the Year (Barcelona, Spain)

Soke is a volunteer instructor and has been nominated “Distinguished Citizen of the Year” 2016 by the Hackensack Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his dedication to the youth of the community.
